How To Backup Site?
Now if you want to back up your site you need to do three things which are as follows:-
- The first thing is to install the backup plugin on your site. So to install the plugin. Go to your WordPress dashboard and then go to the plugins section. After that click Add New option. Now search for a plug-in called updraft, this is the plugin that we’re going to use for backup. I personally use this plugin to take the backup of ULTICATE. Now Install the plugin and Activate it.
You can also download it from the below box or from the WordPress.org site here is the link and can manually upload it in your plugin section.
- So once the plugin is installed we can now take the backup of your WordPress site. so to take a backup, click settings of the Updraft Plugin and then click Backup Now option. In this way, you can take your backup.
How To Use The Backup of Website?
Now, how do you use this backup? There are two situations where you might need to use your backup. Let’s take the first situation. Let’s say by mistake you change something on your site and you want to go back, here you can use your backup to go back to a previous time. So let’s see how actually you do this work. Let take an example that You had deleted the homepage of your site. Now you will see blank at the place of your homepage. If you want to restore the homepage in this situation, all you have to do is go to Updraft Click Restore.
Select the backup files which you had previously downloaded in your computer and which you want to restore. Now check all the options and click restore to restore your site. When the process will complete and if you go to your site and click refresh, you can see that you have got your home page again which is exactly the same as the previous one. So this is how you can use the backup to restore your site.
Let’s move to the second situation. So now you cannot always remember to take a backup every time. So let’s say you take a backup today and after two weeks of working on a site your website crashes. You will lose all of the changes which were made during those two weeks. So to avoid this we can set up a schedule that will take a backup of a site at regular intervals. By doing this your site content will always be backed up without having to backup manually. Now We will see how you can set up an automatic backup in your online cloud spaces.
How to set up an automatic backup?
Now we will see how to set up an automatic backup? So to set up automatic backup, go to settings updraft Plugin and then again go to the Settings tab. Here you need to choose how often do you want to take the backup. So I recommend you choose the weekly option. Choose the option four-four in the section of how much time would you like to keep your backup. These settings will take one backup every week and it’ll keep that backup for four weeks.
This means you will always have the backup for the last four weeks. Next, you need to choose where you want to store your backups. So the app draft gives you different places where you can store your backup. I recommend and I personally use Google Drive as my storage. Then scroll down and click Save As. Soon as you click save updraft will ask you to link your Google account, so that it can store the backups there.
To link your google account, click the link provided in the pop-up and it’ll ask you to sign in to your Google account, choose the google account where you want to keep your backups. After Google will ask for your confirmation, click allow. Then it will take you to Complete Setup Page, now click complete setup option to finish the linking.
Now your Google Drive account will be successfully linked to an updraft which means all your backups will be safely saved to your Google Drive. So the automatic backup setup is now complete. So now your site will be backed up automatically and it’s safe from crashes.
How to restore your WordPress Website?
Now after we have these backups What if your site crashes? and when we try to reach the admin area What if we are not able to access it? Let’s see how we can use our backups to recover a crash site. So in order to recover a crash site, we need to do three things first we need to remove the old WordPress installation which has now crashed. Then in step two, you need to make a fresh WordPress installation on the same domain. Then finally we can restore the website using the files we have in our Google Drive.
- To recover our crash site you have to go to remove the current WordPress installation. To remove it, go to your web host. Let you have GoDaddy hosting. Firstly Sign in your GoDaddy account. Now in order to remove WordPress, Click manage all options in the WordPress Manager Section.
After that click the three dots which is in the top right corner. Click Remove.
Now GoDaddy we’ll ask you to confirm. Type reset and click remove. And your crashed WordPress site will be removed. Now once the old site has been removed we can now restore our site.
- So let’s go to step two of recovering a crashed website, which is to reinstall WordPress on the same domain. To install a fresh WordPress site, click add site in the WordPress Manager Option. Hit the Get Started Option.
Choose your domain and click Next and then again next. Now keep username and password for the new WordPress site and click Installed. Okay, so now a new WordPress site will be installed on your domain. Now log in to your WordPress dashboard. Before we are not able to access the site but now we have a working WordPress dashboard. The look of your site will be a default. So now it’s time to restore our files from the backup. So to restore the files, we need to install the updraft plugin on this new WordPress site.
- To install updraft, go to your dashboard. Then go to plugins and click Add New. Now search for updraft again and click install and activate. Now the plugin has been installed on your new website, to restore your site go to settings of the updraft. If you go to existing backups You can see that there are no backups there.
- Now, how can we fix this? Because we installed updraft on a new WordPress site. It is no longer linked to our Google account. To help the plugin find the backups. We need to link it to the same Google Drive account, which we used before. So to link the Google Drive account, go to settings and then choose Google Drive and then scroll down and click Save Now.
When you click save like we saw before the plugin will ask you to link your Google Drive account. Click the link which you see in the box. And choose the required Google account and allow the Updraft Plugin to use Google Drive to store your plugin. Now Google Drive is now successfully linked to your plugin. Let’s check the backups. So again go to existing backups And now if you click rescan remote storage.
You can see that we have got the backup which was stored in our Google Drive. To restore your site all you have to do is click the restore option. Select all the items from the checkbox and click restore. That’s it our website should now be restored. To check it go to your site. If you click refresh. You can see that your site is restored with the same content.
Everything is done. This is how we can take a backup of your site and then restore it when you need it. Now you know in WordPress you get frequent updates for your plugins and themes and there is always a chance of breaking your site when applying an update.
Now if you want updraft to automatically take a backup before updating any plugin or theme, you can get the premium auto-backup feature.
